Two hundred and thirty cars were harmed in the making of Fast & Furious 7. They were raced off ramps, parachuted from planes and driven head-first into each other.
For the seventh instalment in the multi-million dollar joy-riding franchise, the emphasis was on real stunts. Only 10 per cent of the action sequences in the film were generated by computer, which goes some way to explaining why so many of 340 cars used in the film were trashed.
Dennis McCarthy, the man who modifies the cars for the film, gives each one the same basic structure: a 500-horsepower fuel injection unit and a three-speed manual transmission. This minimises the range of spare parts that have to be used, and allows the stunt team to minutely choreograph each scene without having to know the individual peculiarities of each vehicle.
The Lykan HyperSport
This Middle Eastern supercar, made by the Beirut-based company W Motors, is the most expensive to feature in a Fast & Furious film. There are only seven models of the car in the world, with each one priced at around £2.3 million.
Even the headlights on this car are outrageous, illuminated with white gold, diamonds and sapphires.
The HyperSport has a maximum speed of 240mph, and goes from zero to 60mph in less than three seconds. In the film, we watch the HyperSport jump from one Abu Dhabi skyscraper to another.
Dennis McCarthy made six exact models of the car using molds lent by W Motors, fabricating them from fibreglass rather than carbon fibre, and using a Porsche Boxster for the chassis.
1970 Dodge Charger
This modified 1970 Dodge Charger, which is the signature car of Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), is one of five cars dropped from a Lockheed C-130 Hercules plane in one of Fast & Furious 7's most spectacular stunts, shot above the Arizona desert.
One Charger was dropped from 12,000ft and another exact replica from 8,000ft. Attached to military-grade parachutes, most of the cars survived the drop. In total, nine versions of the Charger were made for the film.
The scene was shot in a multitude of different ways: three skydivers with hand-held and helmet cameras jumped with the cars; cameramen filmed from the interior of the plane and from a helicopter circling nearby; there was camera crew on the ground; and each car was fitted with two or three Go-Pros.
Toretto's Charger was introduced in the first film in the series; it belonged to the character's father.
Aston Martin DB9
Director James Wan - who himself drives a Prius - is pictured here with the Aston Martin DB9, the car of choice of the film's British villain, played by Jason Statham.
Statham's Aston Martin is involved in a head-on collision with Vin Diesel's Dodge Charger in Fast & Furious 7.
The cars were attached to cables and driven into each other by remote control. With each car travelling at 40mph, a massive amount of damage was caused. "It was awesome," says McCarthy. "It shook the ground like an earthquake."
Maximus Ultra-Charger
Dominic Toretto's modified brushed-metal 1968 Dodge Charger was acquired by Dennis McCarthy at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show in Las Vegas.
Made by Scott Spock Racing and Nelson Racing Engines, it has a 2000-horsepower engine and can reach speeds of 260mph. It's valued at more than $1million (£675,000).
Dodge Challenger R/T
This classic American muscle car is driven by Michelle Rodriguez's Letty Ortiz; in it she saves Paul Walker's Brian O'Conner from the coach trip from hell.
Plymouth 'Cuda
Also driven by Letty Ortiz, this souped-up 1970 Plymouth 'Cuda first appeared in the previous film in the series, Fast & Furious 6.
Bugatti Veyron
The perfect car for the flamboyant, fast-talking Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson). According to the Guinness Book of Records, the Super Sport version of the Veyron is the fastest street-legal production car in the world, with a top speed of 267.856mph.
Jeep Wrangler
This armoured 2015 Jeep Wrangler is driven by Tej (Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges) in Fast & Furious 7.
Plymouth Road Runner
Another classic American muscle car makes an appearance in the seventh Fast and the Furious movie.
